Who Are You!?!

I have written a lot about getting into relationship with God, cleansing our hearts, and service for God. Today, as I studied, the thought came to me that I have been preaching and speaking to others about our identity in Christ. Well, what about me and you? Who am I and who are you? There is no such thing as second-hand spirituality. No one else can develop Christian maturity on our behalf. That is up to us. A strong Christian heritage is an asset, but it cannot take the place of your own vibrant, growing relationship with Christ.

"And the evil spirit answered and said, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?" Acts 19:15

Paul had a powerful walk with God. God used him so mightily that extraordinary miracles occurred through his life. Cloths and clothes that touched him were taken to the sick, and the sick were healed, evil spirits were even cast out, just from coming into contact with the articles. (Acts 19:10-12). Paul's teaching and preaching were instrumental in building a strong church in the city of Ephesus. Paul's ministry was so impressive and effective that others tried to duplicate it.

Here in our passage of Scripture, seven sons of Sceva were attempting to cast out demons the way Paul did. They confronted an evil spirit and attempted to cast it out , "by the Jesus whom Paul preaches." These men were attempting to use a spiritual power that Paul had acquired by walking closely with his Lord. They could imitate Paul's words, but they could not duplicate the power that God blessed in Paul because they did not have a personal relationship with Christ the way that Paul did. The consequence was the evil spirit retorting, "Jesus I know, Paul I know; but who are you?" Then the evil spirit attacked them and humiliated them. Scripture teaches us that the demons were fearfully aware of who Jesus was, and they were also familiar with the influence Paul had over the powers of darkness, but the evil spirits had no knowledge of the seven sons form Sceva. These seven sons had no relationship with Christ.

Many of us can duplicate the words of our Lord. Many of us can quote Scripture verses that seem to fit with our circumstances. I even see Christians on t.v. trying to imitate the very acts of Paul and Jesus. We can duplicate all these things that are found in mature Christians, but we cannot inherit their walk with God. Christian maturity takes effort. Christian maturity comes with time. Peter and the disciples walked with Christ for three years. The Bible says Paul spent fourteen years in Arabia with God before he started his ministry. An awful lot of us think that if we work hard in our churches, if we memorize enough verses, God will exalt us to high positions and blessed, and powerful ministries. Our passage today demonstrates different.

Friends, if we ignore the place of prayer and if we neglect our relationship with Jesus, we will not grow in our faith. We will not know who we are! Imitating the faith of others will not give us victory. It has to be our faith, our trust, our believing that will only give us the victory. Only as we nurture our own personal relationship with Jesus will our lives be filled with spiritual maturity and power. The Bible tells us that the world is full of spiritual babes and spiritual adults. Examine yourself and ask where are you? Are you a babe or adult? Only you and God know the answer. Who are You?

May God richly bless you today!! H Trent!

We Are Royal Priests!!!

If you are a Christian, you are a priest, chosen by God. As members of the royal priesthood we have constant access to the King. If there is ever a need in our life, we don't have to find an intermediary or enlist another priest in order to gain a hearing from the King. Our position as royal priests allows us direct access. This privilege describes our position as a priest. "But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light." 1 Peter 2:9. We need to also understand that priests also have a function. It is the responsibility of a priest to work within a priesthood. Scripture does not promote the practice of individual priests, each with a separate ministry. Priests are supposed to function together. (Lev. 9:1). An unbiblical sense of individualism can isolate us from functioning within God's royal priesthood as He intend...

Thinking About Calling Down Fire!?!

James and John were refered to as "the Sons of Thunder" in the Bible. When they discovered a Samaritan village that would not receive Jesus, they were fully prepared to call down fire to consume the entire community. "And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?" Luke 9:54. Maybe they felt that through such a show of power, the gospel message might be enhanced. The two brothers were willing to sacrifice the lives of the village in order to further the cause of the gospel. However, Jesus rebuked them! Later, the apostles heard that Samaria had responded to the gospel. Guess who was commissioned to go and help them receive the Holy Spirit? None other but Peter and John! It was God's purpose that the people not be destroyed but saved! God chose not to rain down fire on the village, but to shower it with His Holy Spirit! I wonder what w...

To Give or Not To Give!

As a society in today's world, we are taught that money is everything.  We will spend 3/4 of our lives amassing money and things to make us comfortable for the last part of our lives. The Bible teaches us that, "Money is the root of all kinds of evil." 1 Timothy 6:10 NKJV.  It does not say that money it's self is evil, but that it can lead to evil. There is nothing wrong with having vast amounts of money, the question is, where is the heart in great fortune?  Where is the heart with little fortune? Today I want us to visit a passage of scripture that deals with fortune and where the heart is:   "Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, 'In what way have we robbed You?' In tithes and offerings.   You are cursed with a curse, For you have robbed Me, Even this whole nation.   Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this," Says the LORD of hosts, "If I will not open for you ...
