Have you ever taken anything for granted? If you are like the rest of us, your answer will be yes. There are a lot of things that we end up taking for granted, especially in our relationships. One of the things we can take for granted is God's presence in our lives. We might even assume that because Jesus said He would be with us always, He will follow us wherever we go. However, we need to realize that Jesus does not follow us; we are to follow Him.
"Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me." Matthew 16:24
We don't invite God to join us in our activity. He invites us to become involved in His activity. Jesus said: "You did not choose Me, but I chose you." (John 15:16). Following Jesus requires absolute obedience. He does not seek our counsel about which direction we think is best to go. God already knows what is best without ever having to consult us.
When we choose to follow Jesus, it will lead us into experiences we never dreamed of! We will be with Jesus as He weeps with those trapped in sin, we will feel the pain that He feels, we will see those who were spiritually blind experience the joy of coming to God for the first time. We will also see lives that were broken made whole, marriages restored, those in bondage released, and the mourning, comforted. We will experience all this and more as we follow Him. There will be times that following Him will be easy, but there will also be time that the journey will be difficult and we will be tempted to abandon Him. Following Jesus can mean going through many things. He never said to the disciples, or anyone for that matter that it would be easy, He only said it would be worth it.
Maybe today you have stopped following Him. Maybe you have taken His presence for granted as you continue on your own walk, expecting Him to follow you. Maybe now you want to follow Him again. Whatever the situation, when you stopped following Jesus, you did so on your terms. However, returning to Him is strictly under His conditions! We must learn and remember, He is God, we are not! Are we willing to follow Jesus anywhere, at any time, at any cost? That is the only way that we can follow Him. On His terms!
May God richly bless you today!! H Trent!
