These are trying times we live in. We are constantly bombarded with opportunities that entice us to invest our time and our energy. And, everyday the "voices" of urgency cry out for our every available moment. There are so many causes out there that promises us that if we spend time on them we will reap great rewards. The thing that I am concerned about is this: How do we recognize God's voice with so many other voices competing for our attention?
"See that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil." Ephesians 5:15-16.
One thing the Bible teaches us is that a fool makes unwise choices with his time. With every new opportunity that comes, the fool chases a different direction. He doesn't question whether it's the best choice or not, he just chooses to follow the loudest voice. There will be a point, however, where he will discover, to his dismay, that he has squandered the investment of his time.
Friends, the days we are living in are evil! Marriages are under tremendous pressure, families are disintegrating, we are seeing more and more single parents, kids raising kids. Multitudes are dying each year without hearing the gospel of Jesus Christ. Investing our life wisely is critical to us and those around us. Foolishly spending our time in sinful or wasteful pursuits can cost us and others dearly. Many times, though, it is not evil pursuits that rob us of our time. Instead it is the temptation to sacrifice what is best for what is good.
Satan knows that blatantly tempting us with evil will be obvious, so what does he do? He will lure us with distractions, leaving us no time to carry out God's will. He will tempt us to fill our schedule with good things that we won't have time for God's best! We might even inadvertently substitute religious activity for God's will, pursuing our own goals for God's kingdom instead of waiting for His assignment.
So, how do we know God's voice from the other voices around us? We invest in our time wisely! We make the time to spend with God, studying His Word, and listening to Him. Only when we dedicate ourselves to making time for Him will we learn to recognize His voice from the others around us. Friends, time is a very precious commodity, we need to make sure we invest in it wisely!
