There are a lot of people, Christians included, that appal me by the way that they speak. Filthy words, degrading comments, prideful accusations; I wonder what really goes on inside them. You see, the Bible stresses that what we say is an accurate indication of what is in our heart. If our words bless and encourage others, they give evidence of a compassionate heart. If we share the good news of Christ, we demonstrate that our heart is grateful for our own salvation. When others around us are in crisis, will they find peace and comfort in our words? Do we frequently and spontaneously offer prayers for others? Do our words and manners in which we say them reveal a patient, kind heart? All of these behaviors indicate a heart that is like the heart of the Father.
"But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man." Matthew 15:18.
Friends, some difficult questions we need to connsider about ourselves are: Do we often regret our words? Are there people even now that are hurt or angry because of something we have said? Do we enjoy gossip? Do we tend to criticize others? Do we feel that we are not responsible for what comes out of our mouth's when we are angry, but blame someone else? Does our mouth spew grumbling and complaints? Friends, these behaviors come from a heart that is not at all like the heart of God!
Some of us might say, "But that's just the way I am! I am always saying the wrong things." But friends, Scipture clearly states that an abusive, condemning tongue is not under the control of the Spirit. (See James 3:3-10). I believe that a sanctified mouth is a wonderful instrument for God. A heart like God's heart will produce only pure and loving words. If you find yourself today thinking that you are guilty of poor speech and an unloving, unclean heart, without making any excuses for your words, ask the Holy Spirit to forgive you for any words that have brought harm to others. Then ask God to discipline your heart so that every word that proceeds out of your mouth is used by Him to encourage and edify others.
