Here's a bold statement: I think the quality of our worship is not based on our activities but on our character. Take for instance churches today, many can mistakenly assume that the better the music, the more impressive the building, the more animated the preaching, the more worshipful the experience will be. But I believe the Scriptures teach us that genuine worship originates from within our hearts. If we have a poor and unhealthy relationship with our Lord, then all these other things are nothing more than religious pageantry!
"He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi, And purge then as gold and silver, That they may offer to the Lord an offering in righteousness." Malachi 3:3.
The Levites were the worship leaders of their day. They were charged with setting up the holy things and offering sacrifices on behalf of the people. God declared that before they could worship Him in righteousness, He would first refine them with His refiners fire, purging them of any impurities. Just because they were members of this religious profession, having official responsibilities in the temple, and going through the rituals of worship, did not guarantee that their religious activities would be acceptable to holy God.
Friends, today we tend to look to external things to give us a more powerful experience of worship. But what we really need to do is to look internal, at our hearts. The true quality of our worship rests within the condition of our hearts towards God. If we have not allowed God to purify us first, our worship will be void of His presence. If we have not allowed Him to purify our hearts, the offerings we offer to the Lord will be unacceptable to Him. And, attending a "religious service" will not automatically ensure an encounter with God.
If we are not satisfied with the quality of our worship we should not be fast to blame the environment we are worshiping in. We must first look to the condition of our own hearts. We need to ask God to refine our heart until it is pleasing to Him. We do this through daily study and meditation upon His Word, allowing it to penetrate and wash our hearts clean. Ask God to refine your heart and then you will be free to worship Him as He intends!
