God's Word! Given to us by Divine inspiration. 66 books by 40 different authors over a period of around 1500 years. Jesus Himself quoted from over 24 books of the Old Testament. The last post spoke on how we suffer from a lack of knowledge because many of us are not as diligent in our Bibles as we probably should be. But, even though many of us are diligent in God's word, we need to learn that knowing God through experience is radically different than knowing about God from a theology textbook. Not only did Jesus quote from the Word, He lived it and demonstrated to others how to live it, how to really know God. Consider:
"And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, Whom You have sent." John 17:3
As Jesus prayed, He prayed that we would know God. According to the Bible, you cannot really say you know God unless you have experienced Him. (Phil. 3:8, 10). Biblical knowledge always involves experience. There is head knowledge, and then there is heart knowledge. You may become discouraged because the truths you read about in the Bible are much richer than the reality of your own experience. Many of us that are full of head knowledge can proclaim we know all about God without ever really knowing God by experiencing Him in our lives. Others of us that are full of heart knowledge of God, have more than likely come to know God, not only through His Word, but by also experiencing Him in our lives.
If you have not experienced God's power at work in and through your life, do not settle for a secondhand knowledge of God's power, rejoicing in what He has done in the lives of others. Jesus' prayer was that you would come to know God and His presence in your life and experience. Do not discount the power of God as described in the Scriptures simply because you have not experienced it. Rather, bring your experience up to the standard of Scripture, never reduce Scripture to the level of your experience. Don't settle for a head knowledge of God's love. Jesus prayed that you would experience the depth and width and height of His love and that you would enjoy God's full and unending love in the day-to-day experiences of your life.
If you sense there are biblical truths that you are not experiencing, keep that truth before you and ask God to bring it into your everyday experience. We have all learned a trade, first in our head, but then through our experience. We know God the same way. First in the reading and instruction of His Word, and then by applying it to our lives---our experience. Ask God if there are any adjustments you need to make in order to receive His promises. Don't give up on the promises of God, stay with them until you are fully experiencing them! Get the head knowledge and heart knowledge of our Lord!
May God richly bless you today!!! H Trent!
