Have you ever received a command from Jesus? If you have, did you obey it? Did you do what Jesus commanded you to do, or did you make excuses like so many in the Bible have? Thinking about this over the last several days, I noticed that there are many of us that say that God has called us to do something, but then we make excuses for not doing it. Do we have a problem with stepping out in faith? Do we doubt what we are supposed to believe? I find it interesting that when our supervisors, our leaders, even our spouses give us commands, most of the time we are quick to obey. However, when Christ commands us, many of us do not follow the orders.
"And He sent two of His disciples, telling them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. Say to the owner of the house he enters, 'The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?' He will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there." The disciples left, went into the city and found the things just as Jesus had told them." Mark 14: 13-16.
Jesus gave two disciples very detailed instructions about going into a certain town, finding a certain man performing a specific task, and having that man lead them to a certain room that would be ready to receive them for the Passover. The disciples didn't ask questions, they didn't have doubts. The instructions might have seemed unusual, but their Lord was telling them, commanding them to go as He said. They had been with Him, saw Him heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons, they had no cause to doubt or distrust the commands of their Lord. Jesus knew what they would find, so He commanded them specifically. One of the most memorable, precious times the disciples would spend with their Teacher rested on the obedience of these two disciples.
How about us? We read and believe all the things the Scriptures tell us about our Lord. We believe that He did indeed heal the sick, raise the dead, walked on water, and is coming again. So why is it that so many of us are quick to disobey the commands of our Lord? Do we not understand that our obedience to Him always brings fulfillment to our lives? Jesus already knows what we will find, or what we will experience, or what the end result of our obedience will be! We need to learn that when He tells us to go, we obey immediately!
Many of us will wait and try to figure everything out ourselves. We want everything to make perfect sense to us before we obey. What if the disciples had tried to figure everything out? What if Peter or Paul waited until they had things figured out before they went on the missions God commanded them to go on? We need to understand that God will sometimes lead us to do things that will not make sense to us, or that we will not understand. It is not our job to make sense of them or understand them, it is our job to be obedient! Our Lord just commanded us! I have learned that He usually doesn't reveal all the details of His will when He first speaks to us. Instead, He tells us enough so that we can implement what He has commanded, but He withholds enough that we must continue to rely upon His guidance, and not our own understanding!
Friends, our response to God will affect what God does next in our life. And, our obedience may affect how others around us experience Christ as well. Remember, the actions of the two disciples obedience gave all the disciples the learning experience of Christ in the upper room. If there is any directive God has given to us that we have not obeyed, we need to submit to His Lordship and become obedient immediately! If we do, we will watch God's perfect plan unfold in our life!
