Most of us know that we cannot prevent God from accomplishing His work in the world around us, but did you know that we can quench His Spirit in our lives? God has given us the freedom to withstand the Holy Spirit's activity in our lives. When we reject, ignore, or disobey what the Spirit is telling us, we quench His activity in us.
"Do not quench the Spirit." 1 Thessalonians 5:19.
The prophet Isaiah described the result of quenching God's Spirit in our lives: "Hearing you will hear and not understand, and seeing you will see and not perceive; For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, so that I should heal them." Isaiah 6:9.
When we sin, the Holy Spirit will convict us of our need for repentance. If we habitually ignore Him and do not repent, our heart will grow hardened to God's Word. If the Spirit speaks to us about God's will for us, and if we refuse to take action, a time will come when the Spirit's voice will be muted in our life. If we continually reject the Spirit's promptings, a day will come when we no longer hear a word form God. If we repeatedly stifle God's word to us so that we are no longer sensitive to His voice, He will not give us a fresh word.
Friends, we need to be wary of resisting the voice of the Spirit in our life. We may not always be comfortable with what the Spirit is saying to us, but His words will guide us to abundant life. God clearly states through His Word that He will never leave us or forsake us, but He may grow quiet of trying to guide us and reach us if we continually reject His voice in our lives. Examine yourself and ask: Am I paying attention to what God is telling me, or am I quenching His Spirit in my life? The answer may surprise you.
