Repentance!!!

Did you know that repentance is one of the most positive of all words? John the Baptist centered his preaching on repentance. Jesus also preached repentance, commanding His disciples to do likewise. The angel predicted that the Messiah would save His people from their sins. The requirement for this salvation would be repentance.

"The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9

To repent means to stop going one direction, to turn around completely, and to go the opposite way. Repentance involves a dramatic and decisive change of course. God urges us to repent when the path we are taking leads to destruction. Repentance will save us from disastrous consequences. What a wonderful word! How comforting it is to know that the Creator loves us enough to warn us of impending danger!

But I think that our problem is that we think of repentance as something negative. When we recognize our sin, many of us prefer to "rededicate" our lives to God. We may even tell others we have resolved to be more faithful to God than we were before we failed Him. But the Bible does not speak of rededicating oneself! It speaks of repentance! Repentance indicates a decisive change, not merely a wishful resolution. Friends, we have not repented if we continue in our sin!

Repentance involves a radical change of heart and mind in which we agree with God's evaluation of our sin, and then we take specific action to align ourselves with His will. A desire to change is not repentance. Repentance, the Bible teaches, is always an active response to God's Word! The evidence of repentance is not words of resolve, but a changed life.

James and John were refered to as "the Sons of Thunder" in the Bible. When they discovered a Samaritan village that would not receive Jesus, they were fully prepared to call down fire to consume the entire community. Maybe they felt that through such a show of power, the gospel message might be enhanced. Into A Storm!!!

There are many believers today that think that because they are in Christ, they are free from trials and tribulations. Life will always be good. However, there are going to be times when storms will come to us. Some of those storms will be the result of the choices we have made, some of them will come as a result of attacks by others, some will come for reasons we don't understand, but some storms will come because Jesus has sent us into them. Consider our passage today: "Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowd. After He had dismissed them, He went up on a mountainside by Himself to pray. When evening came, He was there alone, but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it." Here Comes Trouble!!!

  In your mind, what do you believe is the right thing to do for the Lord?  Let me ask this question in a different way:  As believers in Jesus, are we supposed to be passive in our witnessing to the Lord, or are we supposed to be aggressive in standing up for righteousness?  As I look out at my world I see many believers going about their own business while the rest of the world cries out for help.  I see the children living just doors down from us, abused and assaulted while we turn a blind eye assuming that it is none of our business, until it is too late.  I see government leaders making a mockery out of truth and justice while we go on along believing that as long as it doesn't directly affect me I don't have to be concerned with it.  I see many things happening in our world that we could make a difference in, if we would answer the call to go.  But, sadly, many of us remain in our pews unwilling to get involved because we...
